FEMALE HOCKEY
FMH is excited that female hockey has been growing at a rapid rate over the past few years. At this time Fernie does not consistently have sufficient numbers of female players in any given age division to offer exclusively female teams, however every year, we will closely assess the numbers of female and total registrants to evaluate all options available.
We encourage all female players to register in their regular age divisions where we offer integrated skill and team development. All requests for any player to play in a higher or lower age division than their birth year will be considered once registration is closed and total player numbers are known.
We continue to work closely with Elk Valley Minor Hockey to offer additional female-only opportunities such as practices, jamborees and potential tournaments.
********
Starting in 2026-27 there is a new EK Avalanche pilot program based out of Cranbrook for U13-U15 females who wish to play competitive "rep" female hockey. Contact cranbrookminorhockey@gmail.com or visit their website for tryout registration information (deadline May 31) As always, all players must still first register with Fernie before attending tryouts elsewhere.
Expanding on the success of past sessions, Fernie Minor Hockey will be using portions of our extra development ice sessions to offer female-only opportunities in the form of extra practices, clinics and jamborees (dependent on sufficient member interest).
If your player desires exclusive female hockey participation, they must first be registered with FMH and then you may apply for release to play in a female-only program in Cranbrook or Elk Valley if such programs exist in a given year. Rostering and AP (affiliate player) opportunities must follow Hockey Canada / BC Hockey criteria.
